Search and rescue
Volunteers on phones they already own, in terrain where coverage comes and goes. The call-out needs disciplined voice and a map that does not require someone to paste a What3Words into a group chat.
Sound familiar?
- Consumer apps with no PTT etiquette
- Manual position sharing that lags behind the search
- Hard to reconstruct who was where after a long stand-down
What changes
- PTT over IP on volunteers' own phones
- Live map for party positions during the search
- Timeline reports after stand-down
Getting started
Volunteer teams generally run on phones members already own rather than issuing hardware, since call-outs are irregular and a fleet of dedicated radios is hard to justify. The free tier covers a coordinator and one volunteer, which is enough to rehearse talkgroup discipline and map use before a real call-out. Coverage still depends on mobile signal, so it is worth testing on the terrain you actually search, not just the car park.
